OpenAI released ChatGPT: An incredibly smart chatbot

The world of Artificial Intelligence has taken another giant step forward with the recent release of ChatGPT, a new AI dialogue language model (LM) by OpenAI.

What is ChatGPT ?

In a nutshell, ChatGPT is a text-based AI model that leverages the power of natural language processing to produce human-like conversations. The model can answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.

Our goal is to make AI systems more natural to interact with. The free research preview will help us gather feedback so we can improve our systems and make them safer. ChatGPT can remember what was said earlier in the conversation, accept user-provided follow-up corrections, and has been trained to better decline inappropriate requests — OpenAI

College essays are dead.

The academe should be aware of this technology’s existence and be prepared to adapt. The death of essays is inevitable, and it will happen sooner than we think.

Obviously, it creates a situation where students no longer have to think critically or creatively when writing their essays. Instead, they could simply feed a prompt into ChatGPT and have it spit out an essay. This could lead to a decrease in student creativity and critical thinking skills.

I remember spending hours researching and writing back when I was still in college. And now, it can be done in a matter of seconds on a laptop. This is worryingly impressive.

It can debug codes.

Are programmers doomed?

No, at least not yet.

But debugging codes will soon be faster with AI.

Here’s an example:

Are we seeing the death of Stack Overflow?

To demonstrate AI’s ability to write code, I asked ChatGPT to show me how to make an HTTP request in Javascript, and it responded with the following:

And by the way, the latency is incredibly small. The response feels almost instant.

Create better prompt for image generators

.Another application of ChatGPT is text-to-image prompt generation.

Here’s an example:

Awesome! It even remembers the previous conversation. Let’s try to generate an image with MidJourney.

Prompt: a powerful and fearsome character that exudes strength and authority.
They should have the face of a monkey, with bold and chiseled features,
piercing eyes, and a confident expression. They should be dressed in armor
and carrying a weapon of their choice, ready to face any challenge that
comes their way.

This is beyond incredible, in my opinion.

It can reject inappropriate prompts.

ChatGPT could be the first AI that knows when to say no. Gone are the days when AI was just a voice in a machine, it can now reject requests that are inappropriate.

It does not always work, though.

While we’ve made efforts to make the model refuse inappropriate requests, it will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior.

OpenAI says that they are gathering feedback from users to help us improve this system. They are using the Moderation API to warn about or block certain types of unsafe content.

Other limitations

  • ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers.
  • ChatGPT is sensitive to tweaks to the input phrasing or attempting the same prompt multiple times. For example, given one phrasing of a question, the model can claim to not know the answer, but given a slight rephrase, can answer correctly.
  • The model is often excessively verbose and overuses certain phrases, such as restating that it’s a language model trained by OpenAI.

Overall, ChatGPT is an interesting development that could lead to more advanced AI conversations in the future. Right now, it’s mainly competing with Google’s own language model, LaMDA.

This language model is certainly an achievement that should not be overlooked. It marks a major milestone in the development of AI, and it will be interesting to see how it is used in the coming years.
